Crikey! - you mean Niels van der Wal (51.327 km) on an M5 Carbon mid-racer just broke Gert-Jan Wijers (51.287 km) record on a M5 Carbon high-racer set yesterday by only 40 meters!! These marks of course broke Aurélien Bonneteau (50.529 km) record mark on an M5 steel lowracer. Aurélien also rode 50.389? on another M5 machine. M5 has three different bikes in its line-up, ridden by 3 different riders to over 50 km!! No other manufacturer has one! Bram Moens and M5 are having a good weekend!

Note: if I were M5's marketing director, I'd have a headache right now - I would have to rewrite my advertising script every five minutes: "The fastest M5 is...", now wait, "the fastest M5 is...", ahhh, "The fastest M5 now is.." !!! Congratulations Bram! For the record, the fastest M5 is the M5 with Number 8 Fairing and the fastest rider is 14-year old Charlie Ollinger 92.855 kph in 200 meter sprint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-9BU_YErxI. This is video I took at Battle Mountain. Bram, set an hour mark of (80.400 km) in this vehicle in 2003 in Lommel Belgium at a Ford test track.

Here in the US, John Morciglio has built a similar carbon mid-racer bike. I rode it and it is a comfortable design. Neither the Zockra nor John's mid-racer are as low as some of the lowest lowracers built, but they are more practical like a Challenge, Optima or M5.

Yesterday we were sharing the track with a group of about 30-40 DF racers. All pretty good and fast. Ellen had scheduled an "Exhibition" match between some of their racers and ours. A DF/HPV pursuit match. Dunno' why; but the DF'ers cancelled at the last moment. Enh, whatever. Gave us more time for our stuff ;->

What a great weekend in cycling history!

First, Gert-Jan Wijers, age 42 years (51.287 km) and then Niels van der Wal, age 40 years (51.327 km) both broke Francesco Moser's, age 32 years celebrated 1984 world record (51.151 km) this weekend.

Now, Aurélien Bonneteau, age 26 years (52.074 km) has gone further than Grame Obree's, age 27 years, first one-hour mark set in Hamar, Norway in 1993 (51.596 km). Note Obree went further the next year in 1994 (52.719 km). Can you imagine if this had happened in 1993? I can hear the UCI crying again now: "But they're not bicycles!" Maybe not according to their UCI rules, but certainly according to the WRRA!

In case anyone was wondering what 43-year old Obree was up to now…

DFers are finished with the 200 meters, and their best was 38.90. Certainly faster, by far, than I can do in anything short of fully faired!

Wow wow ho!

I was supposed to be there to update the 'official' site on the fly.
But we were bitten by the IT-bug: the internet was there, I could browse the web but not upload the data to the server.

So I am at my parent's place 30 k's away from the tight lycra
But as least I tried to keep up with the results, last update was 5 minutes ago.

Too bad I missed all the good stuff but I'll be back in Apeldoorn in time for the diner. We will have some time to discuss the results and make some additional remarks (all the bikes and timing official stuff still needs to be completed).

Rob or Garrie, Can you please confirm what type of bike Aurélien rode yesterday (M5 lowracer, highracer?) and what was his distance? (50.389 km) is identical to Gert-Jan's old record.

Sean Costin's 200-meter speed of 10.728 seconds = 67.114 kph is very impressive. Sean says he has always been more of a sprinter, hence his prowlness in the 200-meter and the Kilometer. He just happens to do the One-Hour too, just like Sam Whittingham. Both have had success in the One-Hour too!

Sean's mark would have stood as an outright speed mark, until supersceded by these other marks from the UCI past
1966 - Daniel Morclan (Fra) rides 10.72, indoors, presumably at near sea-level at Hallenstadion in Zurich, Switzerland for the UCI Amateur indoor record.
1967 - Omari Phakadze (URS) rides 10.69, then 10.61 outdoors at high-altitude in Mexico City for UCI Amateur mark.
1986 - Leigh Barczewski (USA) rides 10.723 outdoors at high-altitude in Colorado Springs to set UCI Professional mark. Leigh won fame in 1980 by riding the Vector Tandem human powered vehicle to a record speed.

Barbara Buatois gets my vote for
RECUMBENT RACER OF THE YEAR

In a three-month span, at three historic record-breaking human powered vehicle competitions, Barbara Buatois of France has become the number 1 female recumbent racer of all time. Note: She's the only racer to attend all 3 of these historic events.

FORD HUMAN POWERED SPEED CHALLENGE, Romeo, Michigan, USA

I checked the results and found some strange things. Digits swapped during speed calculations, records not being mentioned and even results that were completely missing. After a good night I checked all the numbers and added the times for the 200m runs (for some of the runs I did not get the times, only the speed).

This morning Hans drove Sean to the airport, helped me to get the last bits fixed and went back to bed..
Everything should be complete by now - I also added some links to photos and videos on the pictures page.

This was a great weekend with very good results.
At the price giving Sean donated his price money for next year's event - looks like the organization will have to do this again next year :-)

Rob

P.s: Mike, as far as I have been told Aurelién has been riding his M5 high racer for all his attempts.
